Introduction

 

 

The Department of Music of National Dong Hwa University was previously the Department of Musical Education of Hua Lien University of Education. 
It was established in 1992 with the aim to cultivate excellent elementary school music teachers. 
In order to cope with the changes in social structure as the demand for the number of teachers reduced, the department actively transformed to Department of Music in 2006. 
Master’s program was established in 2007 with aims to cultivate experts in music research and performance and provide channels for music teachers in Eastern Taiwan to take advanced study courses and do research.
The department was emerged by Dong Hwa University in 2008 and changed its name to “National Dong Hwa University Department of Music.
National Dong Hwa University is a comprehensive university. The campus surrounding is beautiful and the teaching resource is abundant. Currently, Principal Wen-qu Huang is preparing to construct a new Arts College building in Shou Fong Campus to provide students the best learning environment. The new academic building is scheduled to be completed in 2011. By then students will have a brand new concert hall and brand new teaching equipments to use to open a new era for the department.
 

With the aim to cultivate experts in music performance, music composition and music education, students who know well about piano, vocal, music composition, orchestra and percussion are recruited. After the department was emerged by Dong Hwa University, the program structure was re-developed based on the programlization concept to help students clarify the learning goal and direction to connect with their future employment needs.

Program Overview
Basic Arts College Program, Core Department Program and Elective Department Program. 
(1.) Basic College Program: 
Cultivates students’ arts and humanities senses and greatly opens their vision.
(2.) Core Department Program：Apart from common required courses, different skills are cultivated according to students’ expertise.
(3.) Elective Department Program：Uses three major topics, music education, music performance and music composition, as the main orientation to cultivate healthy learning environment and students’spontaneity and self-discipline to store employment competitiveness.
 

The aim is to cultivate talents who have artistic senses and academic and teaching abilities. Currently, the recruiting subjects are piano, vocal and chorus conduction students.
The study course includes common required courses (12 credits) and elective courses (20 credits).
  • ·Common Required Course includes: Music Research, Modern Music Teaching, Music Analysis Project, Guidance Research, and Independent Research.
  •  Elective courses are in accordance with students’ major and are taught in different groups.  
o        Students whose major is vocal has to take Vocal courses, German Lieder Research Project, Opera Research Project, Vocal Works Research Project and Vocal Pedagogy.
o        Students whose major is piano has to take Piano Accompaniment and Musical Instruction, Piano Research Project, Piano Teaching, Piano Duet Works Research and Piano Concerto Works Research.
o        Students whose major is chorus conduction has to take Chorus Teaching and Research, Conduction, Group Sound Production Technique, Chorus Works Research and Modern Chorus Conduction Technique.  
o        Moreover, there are elective courses such as World Music and Culture, Multi-culture Music Education, Music Education Research Project and Music Therapy Research Project available for students to take to satisfy their needs.
 

We have a strong team of teachers in the department. There are 12 full-time teachers: 7 of them have doctor degree; 2 of them have European College of Music Artist Performance Diploma; and 3 of them have either American or Taiwanese Master’s Degree. There are 26 part-time teachers who studied in Western countries and are musicians with specialties. The interaction between teachers and students is great. They often have passionate conversations about music and performance. Whether the teacher is full-time or part-time, they are all enthusiastic about teaching and are devoted to improve students’ music literacy.

The teachers in the Master’s Program are the best teachers in Taiwan. Among all 9 teachers, 7 of them have European or American doctor degree and 2 of them have European College of Music Artist Performance Diploma. They have rich teaching experiences and are music specialists. Whether it is research or performance, they all have positive feedback from the academic field. Students will receive strict and solid academic training, will have their academic vision expanded and will often be invited to perform to accumulate abundant stage experiences.
 

The teaching facilities in Department of Music are well-equipped and the library resource is rich. There are special concert hall, digital music laboratory, rhythm room, chorus room, ensemble room, piano duet room and music appreciation room to satisfy the diversified demands of teaching and performing. There are 62 piano rooms. The number is sufficient to allow students have enough practice time. All teaching facilities (including Orff Instruments, large orchestra instruments and audio equipments in the music appreciation room) are replaced for new ones each year. The piano students use for practice will be replaced by grand piano. The Department of Music is actively undergoing transformation and is devoted to provide students the most ideal learning environment to improve students’ learning quality.
